Taking on the challenge of a part-time SMU MBA

By Labhaoise O’Donovan, current part-time SMU MBA student

I can’t believe we are already four months into our MBA. We have said goodbye to relaxing evenings and free time in general, but we have said hello to learning and meeting great people. It feels like we have only begun but when I think of all we have learned already I am amazed. We can read any company’s annual report or create an MPS and we are only four months in.

I have also known I wanted to continue my education with an MBA, but I never knew when or where. I have a degree in Biomedical Engineering and have been working in operations for the last 9 years; I reasoned that an MBA would be the yang to the yin of an engineering background. 2 years ago work moved me to Singapore and while here I started looking into getting that MBA. Choosing to do the MBA in SMU was a very considered decision, and one that has worked out remarkably well. I have a great class with interesting professors.

Currently we are taking Marketing and Corporate Finance. I am not going to say it’s easy leaving work twice a week to head to SMU but it is not as hard as I thought it would be. I have made friends who make going to class enjoyable and the topic is always fascinating. I really have learned so much in such a short space of time.

Tomorrow night we are having a meeting regarding the business missions and exchanges. I am excited about the opportunities we will get in the coming year.
