What made you choose SMU when you were deciding on a university?
I chose SMU for several compelling reasons.
The student-centric approach, including small class sizes, resonated deeply with me. We engage in class discussions that promote collaborative thinking, while group presentations enhance professional communication and time management skills. These experiences translate into practical, real-world applications.
Additionally, the College of Integrative Studies (CIS) particularly appealed to me due to my strong interest in corporate sustainability, climate governance, and international relations. CIS offers a unique space for me to explore and integrate these distinct disciplines within a single degree.
What do you recall of your first month in SMU?
Initially, the transition to university—especially in a new country—was daunting and overwhelming.
However, after attending freshmen orientation, I quickly eased into the new environment as I interacted with seniors who shared valuable advice on adapting to university life. Through the ICON Camp and CIS Freshmen Orientation, I experienced SMU’s vibrant student community.
Besides the orientation camps, I took part in fireside chats, faculty mentoring sessions, and fun events hosted by CIS. These activities gave me a strong sense of belonging within a supportive and close-knit community.

What has been your favourite course so far, and why?
My favourite module has definitely been Technological Innovations in Urban Sustainability by Professor Winston Chow. Through the SMU-X course, we worked on a project with Resorts World Sentosa, focusing on sustainable seafood sourcing.
A major highlight was going on two learning journeys—to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery and Singapore City Gallery. These visits allowed me to witness sustainability initiatives firsthand and sparked my creativity.
The sessions with industry experts also deepened my understanding of sustainability across various sectors.
What is one quality that you have been able to nurture at SMU that would likely have a lasting impact in your life?
One of the most valuable qualities I have developed at SMU is resilience, which is essential for pursuing one’s passion and staying creative. I’ve learnt that there will inevitably be productive and challenging periods in my university journey at SMU and beyond. What’s important is to keep moving forward with conviction and a mindset geared towards growth.
Tell us about your CCA.
I’ve spent my time volunteering for CCE London virtually, where I served as the organisation’s first marketing director. Through this role, I discovered how regional legal frameworks can bring communities together to drive positive change.
One of my favourite moments was leading a team of volunteers to organise events that grew into global virtual gatherings. These gatherings provided a platform for people around the world to discuss climate issues and collaborate on solutions.
Q:
What sort of global exposure programmes do you plan to take on and why?
A:
I’m enthusiastic about going on an exchange semester in Sweden, where I hope to gain real world exposure to their sustainability policies and technological innovations. I am confident this experience will enable me to engage with a new culture and build meaningful, global connections.
How are you financing your education?
I am very grateful to be a recipient of the SMU Study Award, which has significantly helped with my living expenses.
How has SMU prepared you for your career aspirations?
SMU provides a conducive learning environment that cultivates adaptability and critical thinking, skills essential for navigating the challenges of a dynamic professional landscape.
Through the interdisciplinary nature of CIS, I’ve been able to integrate climate governance, international relations, and law, giving me a comprehensive understanding of multilayered sustainability issues from diverse perspectives.

Apart from academics, one of the most meaningful things I’ve discovered at SMU is the joy of giving back!
