The TL;DR

SMU Accountancy student Lee Hui En enrolled in the Accounting Data and Analytics Work-Study Elective (ADA WSE) in early 2025 and gained invaluable experience applying technology to real-world tax processes at KPMG. In this blog, she reflects on her journey—balancing studies, building automation tools, and stepping outside her comfort zone to grow personally and professionally.

Why I chose the ADA Work-Study Elective

Before embarking on the Accounting Data and Analytics Work-Study Elective (ADA WSE), I had never built a full-stack automation tool. By the end of my stint at KPMG, I’d presented one to an entire team of professionals.

With automation and digital transformation reshaping the accounting world, I knew I wanted to develop deeper skills and gain real-world exposure. That was what led me to pursue a second major in Accounting Data and Analytics at SMU—driven by a passion for streamlining accounting processes with smarter solutions.

The ADA Work-Study Elective stood out because of its flexibility. The four-day work week allowed me to continue taking up to two courses without going on a Leave of Absence (LOA). It gave me the best of both worlds—practical industry experience and academic progression.

Among the various placement options, I was most intrigued by KPMG’s Tax Reimagined team for their bold use of technology to transform traditional tax functions. I knew I wanted to be part of that change.

What I worked on: Building solutions at KPMG

KPMG’s Tax Reimagined team supports organisations in modernising tax processes through automation, analytics, and strategic advice. During my 20-week internship, I had the chance to work across several meaningful projects, applying both my accounting and tech skills.

Here’s what I contributed to:

  • Automation development with Power Apps, SQL, and Power Automate
I co-created user-friendly apps with Power Apps and an SQL backend, building both front-end interfaces and backend scripts. I also helped automate data flows and simplify tax reporting workflows.

  • Free Trade Agreement Automation
I supported the Trade & Customs team on streamlining Free Trade Agreement documentation, helping improve accuracy and efficiency through automation.

Seeing how these tools came together to solve real business problems was an eye-opening experience.

Stepping up to the challenge

One moment that stood out for me was presenting an app I’d built to the team. It was the first project using a new platform, and I was among the first in the team to test and develop with it.

I felt nervous, knowing how much was riding on it. But with every question answered and every click that worked, I grew more confident. The encouragement I received from my colleagues made all the difference—it reminded me how much growth comes from simply stepping up and trying something new.

I’m especially grateful to my partner and performance manager for their constant support. Having mentors who truly invest in your growth is something I’ll always treasure.

Growth in tough moments

To anyone thinking of applying for the ADA WSE but unsure if they’re ready, I’ll say this: you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you try.

This work-study journey taught me how to navigate complexity, adapt quickly, and remain resilient. It wasn’t always smooth sailing—but I’ve learned that true growth doesn’t come when things are easy. It comes when you rise to meet a challenge.

I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything else. And if you’re considering it—take the leap. You might just surprise yourself.
