The TL;DR

Finding your tribe at SMU takes time, but it’s worth it. Join CCAs, orientation programmes, and study groups to meet like-minded people. Be open to unexpected friendships and lean on your support system for both academic and emotional support. University is more than just studying—it’s about building connections that make your journey meaningful.

Who will your closest uni friends be? The ones who pull all-nighters with you, cheer you on during finals, and get your weird sense of humour? University life isn’t just about hitting the books and acing exams—it’s also about finding your people. Whether you're looking for study buddies, lifelong friends, or future professional mentors, SMU offers plenty of opportunities to meet individuals who will make your experience truly unforgettable. Here are five ways to start building your community.

1. Join a CCA – your gateway to meaningful connections

One of the most enriching ways to meet like-minded peers is by joining a student club or co-curricular activity (CCA). With over 150 student-led clubs at SMU—ranging from the arts and sports to business and social impact—there’s truly something for everyone.

Evonne Yang, an international student from the School of Accountancy, shares how joining a CCA’s executive committee helped her feel right at home. “Over time, I started to feel like I truly belonged at SMU. I found my people—those who made me feel connected to Singapore.”

Beyond the friendships, CCAs offer a chance to lead, organise meaningful events, and pursue your passions beyond the classroom. Whether you're looking to grow personally, contribute to a cause, or simply build memories with others, a CCA can be your first step to feeling at home at SMU.

2. Orientation: more than just an introduction

Orientation at SMU is more than a welcome activity—it’s where many students form their first meaningful bonds. Whether you’re participating in SMU’s Freshmen Orientation (SMUFO) camps or serving as a facilitator, you’ll meet others who are equally excited (and maybe a little nervous) to begin their journey.

Tiffany Zheng, a Year 2 Business student, recalls how stepping up as an SMUFO facilitator changed her perspective. “We came from different backgrounds, faculties, and age groups, but we clicked because of our common desire to help incoming freshmen. This bond will last through the years because of the memories we made.”

Facilitating the SMU Freshmen Orientation 2024 remains one of Tiffany Zheng’s (centre) best memories at SMU.

It’s not just about the activities; it’s about those shared moments of excitement, awkwardness, and bonding that happen at every turn.

3. Study groups: learning together, growing together

Academic life at SMU is rigorous, but it doesn’t have to be a solo journey. Study groups not only help you stay on top of coursework but also create a sense of shared purpose.

Veronica Lee, a Year 2 Business student, says: “It wasn’t always about having fun, but the satisfaction came from knowing that we were pushing forward as a team. There’s something special about working together to get through it.”

Her involvement in the Bondue Business Forum 2023 has sparked Veronica Lee's (right) interest in building meaningful connections between professionals and students.

Collaborating on challenging topics, solving problems together, and supporting one another through high-pressure periods often leads to bonds that extend beyond the classroom.

4. Be open to unexpected friendships

Not all connections come from structured settings. Some of the most meaningful friendships happen when you least expect them—before class, during a group project, or at a spontaneous campus event.

Caroline Fidelia Tjiptohardjo, a Year 4 Accountancy student, reflects on how her closest friendships evolved in ways she never imagined: “After returning from exchange, I met a whole new group of amazing people who quickly became my tribe. Life is unpredictable, and often, the most meaningful connections come when you least expect them.”

These organic interactions can lead to friendships that enrich your university experience in surprising ways.

5. Lean on your support system

University can be both exciting and overwhelming. Having a solid support system can make all the difference. Friends who understand your struggles, mentors who offer guidance, and seniors who share their stories all help you stay grounded.

Tiffany emphasises how important emotional support is: “On tough days, having just one person tell you you're doing great can mean the world.”

Caroline, who is also an international student, adds: “These friendships became my safe space. Moving to a new country was overwhelming, but having people who understood, who were there to laugh with me over the small joys and support me during the tough days, made SMU feel like home.”

Having that support not only helps you push through tough moments but makes university feel like a place where you truly belong.

Finding your tribe at SMU isn’t about rushing to make friends. It’s about being open to possibilities—through CCAs, orientation, study groups, and unplanned encounters. These relationships will shape not just your university life, but your growth beyond it.

As Veronica wisely puts it: “Take it slow. You don’t have to rush into making friends immediately. Eventually, you’ll find the group of people you truly connect with.”
