The TL;DR

SMU’s Global Summer Programme (GSP) is a 4-week experiential learning programme offered to SMU and university students from around the world. Raissa Almira, an undergraduate from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, reflects on her GSP experience working on projects with peers from diverse backgrounds and creating unforgettable memories along the way.

What if your summer break wasn’t just a vacation, but an opportunity to learn, connect, and grow? The SMU Global Summer Programme (GSP) offers just that—an immersive global learning experience in Singapore.

Offered in Term 3, the SMU Global Summer Programme (GSP) is a four-week experiential learning opportunity for SMU students and international university students. Hosted entirely in Singapore, the programme has attracted over 200 participants of some 30 nationalities. It offers students a wonderful opportunity to forge global networks and broaden their horizons, while earning academic credits during the summer break.

Now in its 10th edition, the GSP celebrates this milestone by reconnecting with GSP alumna Raissa Almira, who participated in the programme in 2018 as an undergraduate from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. During the GSP, Raissa enrolled in two courses: Asian Family Businesses and Innovations for Asia’s Smart Cities.

Today, Raissa is the Public Relations and Content Marketing Manager at Turtle Down Under, and fondly reflects on her time at SMU, which played a significant role in shaping her career journey.

Why did you choose to do a summer programme in Singapore, and why SMU?

While Singapore is so close to home, it’s also very different, making it an ideal destination to spend my summer. I was drawn to the vibrant business and academic environment at both Singapore and SMU. What truly stood out to me about SMU was its emphasis on real-world applications and its strong focus on global perspectives. And of course, the campus location right in the heart of Singapore was a major plus!

Participants of the Global Summer Programme (GSP) at SMU also visited various companies in Singapore, including Enabling Village, which promotes inclusive community spaces.

The GSP's interdisciplinary approach and the opportunity to meet students from other countries deeply resonated with me. I was also looking forward to the exchanges of ideas during the programme. The field trips and company visits included in the programme also provided a holistic learning experience.

The most memorable aspect of the GSP was collaborating on projects with students from all over the world. I’ve made so many unforgettable memories and friends from these experiences. I was also thrilled to explore Singapore, discovering its hidden gems and amazing cuisines.

Overall, through the GSP, my time in Singapore was a beautiful blend of education, adventure, and lasting connections that I will cherish forever.

During GSP 2018, students visited JTC LaunchPad to explore Singapore's vibrant startup ecosystem.

A:

The GSP has helped me learn the importance of adaptability and teamwork by connecting me with peers from diverse backgrounds. The programme's hands-on approach has also allowed me to improve my problem-solving skills, as I tackled real-world issues with the guidance of knowledgeable instructors.
