Now, three years into his undergraduate journey, let’s hear from Htoo, who is also pursuing a second degree in Information Systems, on his experiences and insights.
What made you choose SMU when you were deciding on a university?
When I was selecting a university, SMU checked all the right boxes. The smaller class sizes meant I’d get more personalised attention and build meaningful connections with profs and classmates. Its reputation for excellence assured me that I’d be surrounded by high-achieving individuals who’d challenge and inspire me. SMU’s innovative curriculum also strikes a nice balance between rigour and flexibility, while emphasising hands-on learning and real-world thinking. Being in the heart of downtown Singapore is also perfect for internships, networking, and getting practical experience through the university’s strong industry connections.
What’s your favourite course so far, and why?
My top pick? Definitely “Writing & Reasoning.” I loved the weekly group discussions and presentations, and it was a great platform for sharing my opinions. Beyond the lively debates, the course sharpened my critical thinking skills, and taught me to craft compelling arguments. Diving into different topics and exploring new ways of thinking and articulating my ideas each week was pure intellectual joy.
What is one quality that you have been able to nurture at SMU that would likely have a lasting impact in your life?
At SMU, I’ve mastered the art of adaptability. The fast-paced campus life taught me to think on my feet, stay calm amid chaos, and pivot effortlessly when plans shift. From group projects to unexpected class challenges, this skill has helped me navigate all sorts of situations. And trust me, it’s one I’ll keep long after graduation.
