Meet Lingesh Ganesh, who’s always been fascinated by the role of technology in everyday life and enjoys prototyping new solutions. It is no wonder then, that he’s chosen to pursue Bachelor of Science (Information Systems) at SMU, with a focus on Smart-City Management and Technology.

Tell us more about yourself.  

From young, I’ve been captivated by how technology makes life easier. In particular, I’ve been particularly interested in the seamless efficiency of systems like the EZ-Link card, which simplifies daily commuting. It’s these simple but impactful innovations that sparked my desire to create technology that improves people’s lives.

This drive led me to take part in hackathons, where I enjoy the challenge of prototyping new ideas. I thrive on collaborating with others, pushing boundaries, and turning concepts into working solutions that solve real-world problems in innovative ways.  

What are some of your interests beyond academic goals? 

Music has always been a huge part of my life. I often spend my free time jamming to tunes on my headphones, with bands such as QWER, ExWHYZ, and Chilli Beans on my playlists. My room is a reflection of this passion, filled with band merchandise and a dedicated shelf displaying my vinyl and CD collection.  

What made you decide on SMU?  

I've been fascinated by city planning from a young age, inspired by countless hours spent on city-building games. That’s why I was especially excited to discover that SMU offers Singapore’s only dedicated major in Smart-City Management and Technology. It perfectly combines my passion for urban development and my desire to leverage technology to drive societal change.  

During the SMU Open House, I attended a sample class and immediately connected with its interactive, discussion-based format. This unique seminar-style method aligns closely with my learning style, providing me with a meaningful and effective educational experience.
