The TL;DR

Passionate about speed and aviation, incoming freshman Joash Law has earned his pilot credentials at Singapore Youth Flying Club and spends his time flying. Beyond the skies, he’s excited to join SMU’s diving club to earn his open-water certification and explore marine life.

Meet Joash Law—future software engineer, certified pilot, and adventure junkie.

Joash has always had a passion for speed and discovery, from flying places with the Singapore Youth Flying Club to planning his next big dive. As he begins his Software Engineering studies at SMU, he’s excited to meet new people, explore student life, and join SMUX Diving to earn his open-water certification and uncover the world beneath the waves.

Tell us more about yourself.

Since young, I’ve been fascinated with creating things—be it building LEGO sets or experimenting with photography on my travels. That same curiosity got me into speed, and sparked my interest in Formula One and aviation, eventually leading me to getting my pilot credentials through the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC). Flying has been a surreal experience—I genuinely love spending time in the air, just surfing the clouds.

What are some of your interests beyond academic goals?

The adventurous side of me is always on the lookout for the next exploration. When I learnt of SMUX Diving, SMU’s student diving club, I knew I had to join. Getting my open-water certification would be a dream; just imagine exploring coral reefs and marine life all over the world. And making new friends underwater would be a bonus!

Outside of adventure sports, I enjoy getting hands-on in different work environments. Each internship I’ve done has been eye-opening. It’s super satisfying to see how textbook theories actually play out in the real world.

What made you decide on SMU?

To be honest, SMU’s location in the city was a game-changer for me. I used to commute 1.5 hours from the east to Ngee Ann Polytechnic for 8am classes—it was brutal. With a campus just 30 minutes away from home sealed the deal for me!

Beyond convenience, I was also drawn to SMU’s guaranteed global exposure (perfect for travel enthusiast like me), the flexibility of free electives, and the small class sizes.

And SMU being five minutes from the Marina Bay Street Circuit… as a Formula One fan, I’m not complaining!

What are you looking forward to the most when the school year opens?

I’m excited to meet people from all walks of life, both within and outside of my course! Even though I’ve made the switch from business to software engineering field, I remain passionate about teamwork and bringing people together to perform at their best!

Lastly, I thrive on a filled stomach. Exploring the best eats around campus and bonding with my new friends would make for a really exciting time in university.
