Offering a tertiary experience like no other, SMU is the perfect springboard for students to pursue a diverse range of interests and knowledge across different fields.
Darshan Ravujee, an incoming SMU Bachelor of Science (Computing and Law) undergraduate, embodies the adventurous and open-minded spirit that defines the university’s approach to education.
“I have had the privilege to attempt unique activities like motorcycling around mountains in Vietnam, skiing in Japan, and even going on a solo travel around Australia,” the Millennia Institute alumnus enthuses.
“Before the semester starts, I have plans to travel to five different destinations on an extremely tight budget—to just take the chance to see the world. I enjoy immersing myself in different cultures and environments, and walking away with priceless experiences. SMU Guaranteed Global Experience presents me with an unbelievable opportunity that I’m excited for in the future.”
Whether you’re an avid traveller like Darshan, or have never ventured far from home, there’s something to be gained from experiencing new cultures and perspectives. This is especially true at SMU, where the university’s global exposure programme offers students unparalleled opportunities to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, gain new skills, and develop a global mindset.
A requirement for graduation since 2018, students are offered a choice from a wide variety of global experiences, from lengthier exchange and internship programmes to short stints for community service and co-curricular activities.
When technology and law come together
Besides fostering a global mindset, embracing digital transformation has become increasingly important for businesses across industries—and the legal industry is no exception.
“On one hand, I’ve always been fascinated by the way technology works and the endless possibilities it creates,” shares Darshan.
“On the other, I’m also interested to learn about how law shapes our society, and understand the role it plays in maintaining justice and order.
The Bachelor of Science (Computing and Law) degree, only offered at SMU, was thus intriguing. How could two distinct fields merge together into one interdisciplinary curriculum? I decided to pursue this area of study because I feel that I can gain valuable skills and knowledge that are highly prized and practical in various sectors.”
Besides SMU’s future-ready academic pathways, Darshan was also drawn to its interactive pedagogy, which emphasises active learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. He noted that seminar-style classes are unique to SMU, and believes the methodology allows students to improve their communication skills and build lasting social and professional networks.
“My friends, who are currently studying in SMU, have received positive testimonials on how they are able to communicate confidently and effectively. This further convinced me that SMU is the right university for me,” he says.
Exciting first steps to tomorrow
With the logistics of registering for his modules of choice out of the way, Darshan is left with the thrill of waiting for the start of the school year and his university journey.
“University is a big step up from what I’m used to, but I think I’m up to the task, and intend to make the most of my time at SMU,” he asserts.
“I think I’m most excited to meet new people. University is a great place to make new friends and connect with people from different backgrounds, and I’m eager to join student organisations and take part in activities where I can meet others who share my interests like football and business.”
Such openness to new experiences also aligns perfectly with SMU’s diverse and inclusive student body. With students from over 170 high schools across 70 cities around the world in last year’s freshman class, SMU offers a rich and dynamic learning environment where students can engage with a variety of viewpoints and cultures.
And while the social prospects are exciting, Darshan is no less excited about the opportunities for growth that SMU has to offer.
He adds: “I also hope to build strong relationships with my professors, and take this chance to learn from their experiences and expertise.
To me, university is a time of personal and academic development, and I’m excited to challenge myself and take on new opportunities.”
