The TL;DR

For SMU Economics student Yang Shufan, SMU’s strategic city campus was the key reason she chose the University for her undergraduate studies. Her SMU experience has been enriching, from intellectually engaging Economics modules to an innovation-driven culture that inspired her to co-found a startup.

What if your university experience could shape not just your career—but also ignite your entrepreneurial spirit? For SMU School of Economics (SOE) student Yang Shufan, choosing a university wasn’t just about academics. It was about finding an environment that offered real-world exposure, innovative thinking, and the chance to build something meaningful. In this article, she shares why SMU stood out to her and how it became the launchpad for her entrepreneurial journey.

What made you choose SMU when deciding on a university?

The main draw for me was SMU’s strategic city campus. Its central location provides seamless access to academic, professional, and cultural opportunities across Singapore.

I was also drawn to SMU’s strong emphasis on international exposure, which aligned with my passion for cross-cultural exploration and personal growth.

Additionally, I appreciated SMU’s teaching methodology. I had previously attended a course at the University and experienced its interactive, seminar-style teaching approach. I found its focus on critical thinking and collaborative learning highly valuable.

Q:

What do you recall of your first month in SMU?

A:

I immersed myself in SOE’s orientation programmes, which were intense but incredibly rewarding. At the same time, I also formed meaningful connections with peers from diverse backgrounds, which helped foster a strong sense of community.

Overall, my first month was a memorable transition. The blend of academic introductions and social activities made for a refreshing and engaging start to university life.

What has been your favourite course so far, and why?

As someone passionate about Economics, I’ve found my modules particularly fulfilling. They combine my interest in quantitative analysis with real-world applications.

The professors at SOE are not only experts in their fields, but also approachable mentors who nurture our intellectual curiosity.

The University’s emphasis on creativity and risk-taking also empowered me with the confidence to co-found a startup, reflecting SMU’s transformative ethos.
