Why I Chose SMU: Computing and Law undergraduate Keagan Poulose

What draws you to a university? For SMU School of Computing and Information Systems student Keagan Poulose, SMU’s distinctive pedagogy was one of the key reasons he chose the university. What made you choose SMU when you were deciding on a university?
I was drawn to SMU's unique pedagogy, especially the seminar-style classes and small class sizes.
The interdisciplinary nature of my degree, Computing and Law, was another strong pull factor. I believe this combination will be highly relevant in the evolving future landscape.
What do you recall of your first month in SMU?
I remember attending various orientation camps, making new friends, and discovering the best study and eating spots around campus.

What has been your favourite course so far, and why?
A:
My favourite course so far has been Contract Law 2 (LAW102), taught by Assistant Professor Lau Kwan Ho. He’s a great prof who teaches with passion and candour. I thoroughly enjoyed his class—it deepened my appreciation for the law.
What is one quality that you have been able to nurture at SMU that would likely have a lasting impact in your life?
Adaptability. Holding leadership positions here is a lot like running a business. Given the fast-paced environment, you need to think on your feet, come up with creative yet effective solutions, and work well with your team to execute them.
Tell us about your CCA.
I’m part of the SMU SoundFoundry, a community that welcomes students passionate about musicianship. We give them opportunities and platforms to express their musicality both professionally and personally.
Our concerts have been some of my best and most memorable experiences at SMU.

What sort of global exposure programmes have you embarked on?
I participated in an Overseas Community Service Project, Project Hai Khun III, in Chiang Mai. We worked with Burmese refugees to develop programmes that helped them upskill, including nurturing soft skills to help them assimilate into the workforce.
How has SMU prepared you for your career aspirations?
SMU has equipped me with soft skills essential for understanding and managing businesses.
At the same time, I’ve gained a network of like-minded peers who are passionate about what they do. Being surrounded by such positive energy has fostered a supportive community where everyone is eager to help one another succeed.

I see myself enjoying the line of work I have chosen, while also having time for my family and personal interests. I hope to still meet up regularly with the friends I've made at SMU.
