Why I Chose SMU: Business Undergraduate Liediana Djoli
Initially intimidated by SMU’s seminar-style learning and emphasis on speaking up, SMU Business undergraduate Liediana Djoli chose the university precisely for these challenges, knowing they would help her grow. Since then, she has honed her adaptability, built strong connections, and taken steps to prepare for her future career.
What matters most to you when choosing a university—learning style, campus culture, or career support? For SMU Business undergraduate Liediana Djoli, it was all of the above. Drawn by the challenge of seminar-style classes and the promise of real-world exposure, she stepped out of her comfort zone and into a journey of personal and professional growth. Here, she shares how SMU has shaped her into a more adaptable, confident, and future-ready version of herself.
What made you choose SMU when you were deciding on a university?
When deciding between universities, I wanted more than just a name on paper. I was looking for an environment that would challenge me, expose me to the real world, and give me the space to figure out what kind of thinker and doer I wanted to become.
SMU stood out for its seminar-style learning, and its emphasis on speaking up, taking initiative, and working in teams. To be frank, I was initially intimidated by these aspects. But I figured if something scares me a little, it’s probably where I’ll grow the most, and SMU has proven that true.
Q:
What do you recall of your first month in SMU?
A:
The first month at SMU felt like diving into the deep end of university life, but in a good way. Everyone seemed to have something going on: case competitions, startup ideas, CCAs, and internships.
It was fast-paced, but also strangely energising. I remember feeling stretched in every direction, but that period also marked the beginning of learning how to manage my time, prioritise, and not be afraid to ask for help.
What has been your favourite course so far, and why?
Business, Government and Society (BGS) stood out to me because it challenged my views on power, responsibility, and incentives within broader systems.
We debated real-world ethical dilemmas and explored how decisions ripple through society. It pushed me to think beyond profit and consider the wider role businesses and individuals play in an increasingly complex and politically charged world.
What is one quality that you have been able to nurture at SMU that would likely have a lasting impact in your life?
Adaptability. Whether it’s shifting gears during group projects, stepping into new roles in case competitions, or navigating career conversations, SMU teaches you to stay sharp and flexible, while staying true to your voice in the process.

Tell us about your CCA.
I’m part of the SMU Asia Private Equity Club, where I’ve had the chance to connect with like-minded peers across faculties and dive into the nuances of private capital markets. It’s deepened my understanding of real-world investments and helped build friendships that extend beyond the classroom.
What sort of global exposure programmes have you embarked on?
I’ve attended a short summer school in the University of Malaya as an ASEAN candidate, where we were tasked with managing a community service project.
It was a summer filled with laughter, traditional costumes, and countless exchanges across the ASEAN network. The experience taught me the importance of slowing down to give back to society—even in a world fixated on rapid progress.

How has SMU prepared you for your career aspirations?
Not only has SMU taught me how to succeed, it has also equipped me with the skills to ask better questions, recover from setbacks, and work with people of different backgrounds and perspectives.
The exposure to real-world projects, regular feedback, and strong industry connections have shaped my view on value creation and long-term impact—both of which are central to the kind of career I want to build.
Complete this sentence: Five years from now…
I hope to be building something, whether it is value in an investment role, trust with clients, or momentum in a team. Whatever it is, I want to look back and hopefully see how the dots connect.
