As SMU marks its 25th anniversary this year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how far the university has come. From humble beginnings to a vibrant campus in the heart of the city, SMU has grown into a dynamic institution. From Evans Road to the heart of the city

SMU’s journey began in a modest two-storey building on Evans Road. Today, the University has transformed into a 6.5-hectare campus located in the heart of Singapore. With 10 purpose-built buildings, the campus fosters collaboration, innovation, and a vibrant learning environment.

A key highlight of the exhibition was SMU’s commitment to sustainability. The University’s newest buildings set benchmarks for environmentally responsible construction in Singapore, including earning prestigious accolades like the Green Mark Platinum Award. These achievements showcase how progress and sustainability can go hand in hand, reflecting SMU’s dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship.

Honouring trailblazers and celebrating success

The exhibition brought SMU’s inspiring journey to life by spotlighting the visionaries and trailblazers who have shaped its legacy. Figures like Dr Tony Tan, former President of Singapore, and Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Founding Chairman of the SMU Board of Trustees, were celebrated for their pivotal roles in laying the foundation of SMU’s forward-thinking ethos. Their leadership continues to resonate in the University’s dynamic culture today.

Alumni success stories also took the spotlight, showcasing the remarkable impact of an SMU education. From Paralympian Yip Pin Xiu, who has redefined resilience and excellence, to sprint queen Shanti Pereira, whose achievements inspire a nation, SMU graduates are making waves. Entrepreneurs like Vanessa Paranjothy and Dr Nadir Zafar exemplify the innovation and drive cultivated at SMU.

The celebration didn’t stop there. The exhibition highlighted the incredible contributions of SMU’s faculty—the mentors and innovators who challenge students to think big and shape industries. Their passion and dedication are at the heart of SMU’s transformative education.

Learning, growing, and giving back

SMU has always been dedicated to providing an education that goes beyond academics. Since 2000, every undergraduate has completed at least 80 hours of community service, with students averaging 135 hours. This commitment to service reflects SMU’s core values and dedication to nurturing socially responsible leaders.

The SMU-X Programme, launched in 2015, takes learning to the next level by partnering students with corporates, non-profits, and government organisations to tackle real-world challenges. This experiential approach equips students with critical skills and prepares them for success in an interconnected world.
