The TL;DR

SMU's latest freshman cohort is notably diverse, united by a shared goal of transformative education. Among them is Guan Bingyan, a passionate software engineering student who created a device for a disabled child and tutors underprivileged kids. She chose SMU for its strong graduate outcomes, innovative curriculum, and interactive teaching methods. Excited about the opportunities at SMU, Bingyan looks forward to leveraging the university’s global exposure and dynamic environment.

If there is one thing that stands out in SMU’s latest incoming freshmen cohort, it is how diversity reigns. And while the latest additions to the SMU family hail from different backgrounds and boast varied interests, they all share a common goal: to gain a holistic, engaged and transformative education at this premier university in Asia.

Brimming with enthusiasm, these newcomers also bring with them a wealth of experiences and perspectives. They’re passionate about making a difference, from starting their businesses to working on cutting-edge research projects and volunteering in their local communities.

Join us in extending our warmest welcome to Guan Bingyan, a software-engineer-in-the-making who has created a customised device to help with the feeding needs of a physically-handicapped child she met at the Rainbow Centre. The fledgling product designer also tutors underprivileged children on a voluntary basis. Hear from Bingyan on her reasons for picking SMU and the Bachelor of Science (Software Engineering).

What are some of your interests beyond academic goals?

I enjoy travelling, cycling, playing badminton, learning foreign languages, writing poetry and community service. I am a volunteer tutor and have been giving pro bono lessons to underprivileged children.

Why did you decide on SMU?

Firstly, SMU has the most robust graduate employment outcomes across the other local universities. Secondly, with SMU being a relatively “young” and dynamic university and Software Engineering a new degree, I am assured that the curriculum is aligned with the latest innovations and highly relevant to the industry. Moreover, I like SMU’s interactive pedagogy, seminar style teaching and small class size. SMU also provides multiple global exposure opportunities, which I am looking forward to. Lastly, SMU is conveniently located near my home, which will make commuting a breeze.
