Meet Incoming Freshman of SMU 2022 – Andralynn Tan
SMU’s latest incoming Business freshman, Andralynn Tan, is passionate about FinTech and leadership. Previously President of Ngee Ann Poly's FinTech club and Vice-President of the Singapore FinTech Youth Chapter, she is drawn to SMU for its robust Banking specialisation, holistic education, and strong global exposure. Andralynn values SMU’s emphasis on life skills and its impressive graduate employability rate, making it her top choice for future success in the finance industry.
If there is one thing that stands out in SMU’s latest incoming freshmen cohort, it is how diversity reigns. And while the latest additions to the SMU family hail from different backgrounds and boast varied interests, they all share a common goal: to gain a holistic, engaged and transformative education at this premier university in Asia.
Brimming with enthusiasm, these newcomers also bring with them a wealth of experiences and perspectives. They’re passionate about making a difference, from starting their businesses to working on cutting-edge research projects and volunteering in their local communities.
Join us in extending our warmest welcome to Bachelor of Business Management student Andralynn Tan, who holds a deep passion for FinTech — the application of technology to the financial sector, which includes everything from mobile payments and money transfers to investing and asset management. The Ngee Ann Polytechnic alumna was elected the President in her school’s FinTech interest club and was Vice-President of the inaugural Singapore FinTech Youth Chapter where she spearheaded multiple industry events in her polytechnic and on a national level at the Singapore FinTech Festival to promote financial technology knowledge. Hear from Andralynn on reasons why she’s drawn to SMU.
What are some of your interests beyond academic goals?
As a late bloomer, my grades only began to pick up in Secondary Three. Since then, my focus in school has revolved around getting good grades — I am a goal-driven individual. In my polytechnic days, I found that I had a lot of free time, especially during the pandemic. I strove to find my purpose outside of academic pursuits by picking up new skills, reading and joining competitions.
It was then I realised I have a passion for growing teams and building leadership capabilities — I thrive in settings where I can grow alongside capable peers. Moreover, I’m also passionate about all things related to FinTech and finance, especially investments. To unwind, I enjoy baking as I have a sweet tooth; and making mini vlogs about my life.
Why did you decide on SMU?
First, I considered if the programme was robust enough to prepare me for the workplace. The specialisation in Banking within the Finance major offered by the Business Management programme from SMU cemented my choice, as I would like to enter the banking industry in the future.
I was also drawn to the SMU culture, which balances academics, holistic development, and life skills such as presentation and debate. Such competencies would contribute significantly to my working life. In addition, SMU places heavy emphasis on global exposure, which I would like to experience as a student. And finally, employability is a big factor, and the stats don’t lie. With over 96 per cent of SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business students receiving job offers within six months of graduation, it goes to show that a university’s branding and stature stand out for employers.
I am excited to be a SMUgger because…
An exciting journey awaits me.
