Meeting Joseph for the first time, you might not guess he has overcome a serious injury. His easy-going exterior belies a serious passion for sports which helped carry him through surgery for his injury and months of physiotherapy to bring him back fighting fit.
These days, Joseph is into cycling, weightlifting, and the unique combat sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The best way to get to know him? Engaging in meaningful conversations over a delicious meal. In his words, “My favourite part of any hang out with friends or family is when we sit down and bond over conversations and good food.”
The biggest draw to SMU
So what attracted Joseph to SMU? The primary reason: its promising employment prospects. “I decided on SMU instead of other universities because of a variety of reasons, but key among them is the good employment prospects after graduation,” he says.
Joseph believes that SMU’s emphasis on global exposure, practical applications and internship opportunities will provide him with a strong foundation to enter the working world.
The SMU experience
Besides the solid employment outcomes, Joseph is excited about SMU’s guaranteed second major policy. “I like that I am able to choose a second major across all the seven SMU schools, which would provide me with a holistic education,” he says. The central campus location is a huge plus for him too. “Being in the middle of the city makes it easy for me to access the offices at which my future internships could be at,” adds Joseph.
Looking forward to the future
As the school year approaches, Joseph, a people-loving extrovert, eagerly anticipates cultivating strong friendships within the SMU community. From academic peer support to getting a head-start on adulting, he’s hoping to forge lasting bonds during his university journey.
