It’s that time of the year—choosing that dream university to attend! From insightful faculty talks and discussions, to exciting activities and performances, we invite you to step into the shoes of an SMU student and discover what one of Singapore’s most vibrant campuses has to offer. Take an open top bus tour and discover the sights and sounds in and around our campus, or indulge in a gastronomical journey with our options of food galore. Whatever you prefer, here are five reasons you should head down to our Open House on 4 and 5 March:
1. Open your mind to new experiences with over 120 student clubs
From ballroom dancing to extreme sports, SMU is alive and thriving with clubs of every obscure hobby possible. Whether you’re into water sports or a capella singing, there’s something here for you to discover at the CCA display at our Open House. You’ll find these vibrant showcases along our Underground Concourse, as well as special performances during our talks!
2. Hop on board a campus tour
With walking tours and a brand new addition of open-top bus tours, there is plenty to see and do at the Open House. Meet our SMU students as they bring you around and share the most exciting stories of our city campus. Walking tours are every hour from 12pm to 5pm, and bus tours every hour from 11am to 8pm on 4 March, and 12pm to 6pm on 5 March.
3. Get your groove on at SMU Samba Festival 2017— Viva O’ Samba
Centered upon the lively Brazilian culture, Viva O’ Samba is a percussion music festival to bring the growing Singapore samba community under one roof. Spearheaded by SMU’s very own samba percussion band, SMU Samba Masala, and joined by local ethnic percussion groups like Sambiesta, Nadi Singapura, Bantus Capoeira Singapore and ZingO that give the performance our own unique Singaporean flavour, this year’s Samba performance promises to be like no other. So put on your dancing shoes, as we show how we work hard, and play hard as well. Psst… if anything at all, you don’t want to miss the opening parade that starts from our brand new SMU School of Law building all the way to Campus Green.
4. Find out what it really means to create your own learning journey
In this VUCA world, a multidisciplinary approach is key. And the charting of this journey is in your hands (yes, you!). It’s all about flexibility and broad perspectives, and with more than 300 combinations of second majors and 15 double degree combinations, you’re covered whether you choose to specialise or choose contrasting disciplines. So get hands on and have a say in how you want your lessons conducted at the various talks held throughout Open House.
5. Check out our new campus facilities and development
Be one of the first few to take a tour of our SMU School of Law’s very own building along Armenian Street when you come for talks at Open House. (Pro tip: Check out our uber cool moot court. It’s hard to miss as you enter the building).
Just across the street from the School of Law building is the newly launched lyf@SMU—located within the SMU Labs building (or the old MPH building as some might remember it to be). What is lyf@SMU? It’s set to be THE trend-setting co-study, co-work, co-living space that also serves as a ‘living lab’ for applied research. Think of it as a really cool space for social, working, and learning for and with millennials. Yeap, we’ve brought the Google and Pixar-like collaborative spaces right here to the University environment. Oh, and have we mentioned the Instagram-able factor? Not too shabby, indeed!
Awesome spaces at Lyf@SMU
6. P.A.K. Entrepreneurs Challenge showcase—where bright minds get brighter
Do you have an entrepreneurial streak? Then look no further than our annual P.A.K. Entrepreneurs’ Challenge. Organised by Eagles Inc. and SMU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB), this second edition seeks to discover the most validated and executable business plans around. With the rise of numerous startups these days, one cannot underestimate the number of innovative ideas the average millennial has up his sleeve. So come on down and discover some of the most creative minds amongst us, and ignite your own entrepreneurial spirit in the meantime.
SMU’s Open House 2017 is happening on the 4 and 5 March. We’re centrally located and connected to Bras Basah MRT Station. You can also alight at Dhoby Ghaut, City Hall, and Bugis MRT Stations and take a nice short walk to our campus. Find out more at our website.
